Bio

Marcel van Doorn was born in 1973 in the Netherlands.
He studied 3D industrial design and fashion design at the School of the Arts of Utrecht (HKU), followed by a Master’s degree at the Institut Français de la Mode (IFM) in Paris.

For years, he worked at Studio Lidewij Edelkoort in Paris, where he directed some of the trend books but was primarily involved with their magazines. He worked on the entire magazine process of View on Colour (issues 12 through 18), a trend forecasting magazine by Lidewij Edelkoort, assisting Creative Director Manon Schaap. His role included research, conceptualizing, production, styling, and designing props for shoots.

He began his career as a stylist and spent several years living in Sydney, where he worked for VB Concepts, developing concepts and strategies for new brands such as “Real Water.” Upon returning to Europe, he was scouted for the position of Art Director at Stijlinstituut Amsterdam and Studio Commandeur. There, he was responsible for the studio’s creative vision, design, content development, production quality, and project execution and presentations.

He worked with clients including Forbo, Heimtex, Intres, ITKIB, Invista, Livera, and Ten Kate. He was also responsible for internal trend presentations at Het Stijlinstituut and contributed to their trend book, Stijlkrant.

Marcel later became a freelance Art Director at Solar Initiative, focusing on their Bijenkorf account. He oversaw the concept and creative content for the brand’s monthly magazine/catalogue, managed photoshoots, and coordinated external creative teams. After three years, Marcel sought a new challenge and decided to work with more luxury products.

Through his agent “Rose” in Paris, he discovered the role of a set designer. For over 15 years, he lived between Amsterdam and Paris, collaborating on numerous photoshoots with Ellen von Unwerth. Driven to develop and realize his own ideas, Marcel forged a long-term partnership with Hermès, working on their windows, events, and currently consulting on how to guide their brand’s presence in the metaverse while preserving its identity.

He also freelanced as a window designer for Scotch & Soda, creating window displays that translated the brand’s storylines into immersive experiences for stores worldwide. These designs reinforced seasonal launches, fashion shows, fairs, and events.

Today, Marcel runs his studio in Amsterdam and Paris but works globally, developing his multifaceted craft as a designer of products and a creator of experiences, installations, sets, and windows. He has collaborated with prestigious brands in luxury fashion and design, including Cartier, Chanel, Dior, Hermès, the Venice Biennale, Ruinart, Vacheron, Swarovski, and more. For each project, Marcel surrounds himself with an ad hoc team of skilled craftsmen and creatives.

He describes himself as a visual storyteller, crafting objects, worlds, and experiences. The more sensorial and bridging the physical with the virtual, the more exciting his work becomes.
